Columbus mayoral field shifts again; one candidate drops out, two more file intent to run

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The electoral arena for the Columbus mayoral election grows once again, with two new additions to the race.

WRBL News 3 has obtained Declaration of Intent documents for two Columbus individuals — Jonathan Jones and Dr. Jaketra Bryant.

Bryant stated that she does plan on having a campaign kickoff event Wednesday evening, formally announcing her candidacy and sharing policy initiatives.

Jones did not immediately respond for comment on his campaign.

Mayoral hopeful, businesswoman Kia Legette however, has dropped out of the mayor's race — instead claiming she will be running for governor of the State of Georgia.

In a statement Legette wrote:

"Hello, I am stepping down as [candidate for] mayor to run for Governor of Georgia. My solutions and skills to make Columbus even greater rests on a state and federal level. May the best candidate for mayor of Columbus, Georgia win."

Legette says she informed the Muscogee County Office of Registrations and Elections of her decision Wednesday morning.

The race is shaping up to be an interesting one, with seven candidates now being in the race.

Former Columbus City Manager Isaiah Hugley, District 1 Councilmember Byron Hickey, District 7 Councilmember Joanne Cogle, Retired Army NCO Steven Kelly and retired soldier Mark LaJoye have also filed their intentions to run for mayor. By filing an intention with the Muscogee County Elections and Registration Office, a potential candidate can raise and spend campaign funds.

The election is on May 19, 2026. A weeklong qualifying period will start on March 2 of next year.

Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson is term-limited and will not seek re-election.
