Eufaula mayoral runoff to be decided today; Incumbent Jack Tibbs facing political newcomer Chris Beam

EUFAULA, Ala. (WRBL) -- It's Election Day in Eufaula. And the East Alabama city is just hours away from deciding if it is going to stick with a 13-year incumbent mayor – or make a change.

This four-month campaign – brutal at times on both Mayor Jack Tibbs and challenger Chirs Bean – will be over one way or the other tonight.

When the polls close at 7 p.m. CST, officials expect the ballots to be counted quickly.

And those numbers will tell in the story in the runoff between Tibbs and political newcomer Beam.

Both candidates were busy Tuesdaysecuring votes in what promises to be a close race. There were about 2,800 votes cast in the race on August 26th. Tibbs was top vote-getting by just 76 votes.

Both men are expecting it to be just as tight tonight.

"Yeah, I think it's going to be close," Tibbs said. "My opponent has done a good job of getting folks out. Hopefully, I have. It is going to depend on the turnout today, actually."

Beam agrees.

"I think it's going to come down to the number of people who come out and vote today, and also the absentee ballots will be very important in this election," Beam said. "I think it's going to be a very thin margin whether I win or my opponent wins. Either way, I look for it to be a very close race."

The turnout has been steady all day. Both candidates expect to the total ballots cast to be close to the 2,800 last month. Maybe just under that.

The mayor's race is the only one of the ballot in Eufaula today.
