University of Santo Tomas (UST) big man Collins Akowe powered through illness to help the Growling Tigers pull off a 93-84 win over De La Salle University in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Akowe, who revealed on social media that he was down with flu symptoms and even needed intravenous treatment, still suited up and provided energy and toughness inside for UST, which ended a decade-long drought against La Salle.
“Flu game. Damn fever,” Akowe wrote in an Instagram story showing him with an IV line inserted in his arm.
The former National University Nazareth School Bullpups center still finished with a double-double of 20 points and 19 rebounds in the Growling Tigers’ come-from-behind win.
The victory pushed UST to a 2-0 start, marking their best opening in years and giving new coach Pido Jarencio’s squad a confidence boost early in the season.
UST’s victory also snapped La Salle’s 16-game winning streak against them, dating back to 2015.
The Growling Tigers will try to sustain their momentum when they face the NU Bulldogs on Wednesday at the UST QPav Gym. (AC)
