Paldo! Pinoy artist’s Michael Jordan ‘Last Shot’ drawing fetches P12M at auction

A charcoal artwork by Filipino artist Christian “Cort” Talampas depicting Michael Jordan’s iconic “Last Shot” has been sold for $207,400 (around P12.6 million) at the Goldin 100 Auction.

The winning bid was finalized on June 29, marking a major milestone for the self-taught artist whose work first gained international recognition several years ago.

Talampas created the highly detailed charcoal drawing in 2021, spending 72 days completing the piece. It captures Jordan’s championship-clinching basket in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals and quickly attracted widespread attention after a video of the artwork went viral on TikTok, earning nearly 600,000 likes.

The online exposure eventually caught the attention of a collector in the United States, who helped introduce the artwork to Jordan’s camp. In 2022, the six-time NBA champion signed the original drawing before returning it to Talampas together with other memorabilia.

Although an earlier 2022 report by Esquire Philippines said the artist intended to keep the signed artwork, it was later consigned to the Goldin 100 Auction, where bidding opened in May.

Reflecting on the sale, Talampas shared his thoughts on Instagram.

“If you ask me why did I let it Go?… I did NOT!! Because the ARTIST is the ART and I AM My “LAST SHOT”, Nothing can take that Away from ME,” Talampas said in an Instagram post on May 26.

Following the auction’s conclusion, supporters and fellow artists congratulated Talampas on social media after the artwork achieved the multimillion-peso sale. (AC)
