Chris McCullough’s PBA comeback with San Miguel unlikely, says team official

The San Miguel Beermen will not be able to bring back Chris McCullough as their import for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup in October.

In a report from the Daily Tribune, San Miguel team manager Gee Abanilla said that McCullough was unable to secure a release from his current team, the Formosa Taishin Dreamers, which plays in Taiwan’s P League+.

“Although there’s an opt-out clause in his contract, he wasn’t given a release,” Abanilla said. “We want a guarantee that he will play for us.”

McCullough helped San Miguel win the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup title. He loved his stint in the PBA and became interested in playing for Gilas Pilipinas.

With McCullough out of the picture, Abanilla said the Beermen are looking for other imports to reinforce their roster.

“There’s a process to be done, and that includes asking for approval from the top-level management. I also still have to negotiate with the player they’ve chosen, so even if they’ve decided to get players on the list, there’s no guarantee that they will be able to play right away,” the team manager added. “But they need to decide now from the list of players that they have.”

In last season’s Commissioner’s Cup, the Beermen reached the semifinals, where they lost to a guest team, the Bay Area Dragons. (MJD)
