Pampanga Delta in rousing start in Sinag Liga Asya opener

Powerhouse Pampanga Delta offered a peek of its strength with a 101-50 rout of the Antipolo Pilgrims LEAP at the start of the Sinag Liga Asya Born 2001 Cup on Saturday night at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Jun Arthur Roque led the Giant Lantern’s balanced attack with 17 points, while Jonnel Policarpio and Justine Bautista chipped in 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Another Pampanga-based team in Luid One Kapampangan nipped LDG San Pedro 73-70 behind the all-around brilliance of CJ Buitison.

Buitison led the Kapampangan with 26 points, six steals, three rebounds, three assists, and six steals, while IC Danting added 11 points.

In another opening day match, the Laguna DatzLav x EOZ Construction trounced the Hustle Rising Suns, 70-63.

Mhickael Pontanoza showed the way for Laguna with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Glenn Jared Madiz had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The tournament will follow single-round eliminations, with the top eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals with twice-to-beat incentives against the lower-ranked squads.

The semifinals and finals will be both one-game tiffs.

“We’re just so excited for the SLA. It’s a fresh start, but it’s the same old group, same old teams that we have,” SLA chairman Rocky Chan said.

“We also have our former commissioner and now chief operations officer coach Leo Isaac, who will run the show on the basketball operations side. We’re so excited with the inaugural conference of the Sinag Liga Asya Born 2001 Cup,” he added.
