Pacquiao fails to make ESPN’s top 50 athletes of the 21st century

In a surprising turn, former eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao was not included in ESPN’s top 50 professional athletes of the 21st century.

The list, unveiled earlier this week, ranked pro athletes from various sports based on votes from ESPN editions worldwide. Voters were instructed to consider only an athlete’s performance since 2000.

Despite Pacquiao’s impressive ring exploits since 2000, including his breakout performance against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba in 2001 and victories over Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, and Oscar De La Hoya, he did not make the top 50.

The Filipino boxing legend was ranked at No. 71.

Noli Eala, former PBA commissioner and ex-Philippine Sports Commission chair, could not hide his disappointment.

“I can’t believe Manny Pacquiao is not in the top 50. Absolutely ludicrous,” he said in a Twitter post.

Pacquiao’s rival, Floyd Mayweather Jr., was ranked No. 25.
