Macandili-Catindig takes captain role in De Guzman’s absence

Dawn Macandili-Catindig will lead Alas Pilipinas in their exhibition game against Saga Hisamitsu Springs on Saturday, September 7, while original captain Jia de Guzman steps back from national team duties to focus on her Japanese club team, Denso Airybees.

With Jia absent, Dawn is the squad’s only veteran. Although she acknowledges the challenge of playing without Jia, the team remains focused on their goals.

“Malaking responsibility siya kasi ang hirap eh, na wala si Jia kasi I have to work extra hard,” she said in an interview with SPIN.ph.

“For me, I’m just taking it one day at a time,” she added.

Dawn praised her teammates, describing them as professionals. She is hopeful that they will be able to demonstrate the strength of the system they have been diligently practicing.

“‘Di naman alagain ‘yung mga teammate ko, very professional naman silang lahat, so it’s kind of easy. Pero syempre, if we’re going towards that goal, we have to maintain the system and continue the system,” the veteran floor defender stated.

Despite the distance, she mentioned that she keeps Jia updated on the team’s developments, and they continue to work closely together to achieve their goals.

“Wala naman siyang specific advice. We’re just working together, kung paano matutuloy nga ‘yung sistema sa team.”

Both the Alas Pilipinas men’s and women’s teams addressed the media on Friday ahead of their ‘Alas Pilipinas Invitationals,’ where they will compete against Japan’s Hisamitsu Springs and Osaka Blueton.
