TNT Tropang 5G head coach Chot Reyes admitted that the absence of key players made it even more difficult to contain San Miguel Beermen star June Mar Fajardo, who powered his team to a 108-88 rout in Game 3 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
Fajardo was dominant, finishing with 33 points and 11 rebounds, taking full advantage of TNT’s undermanned frontline.
“June Mar has 33 points because we have nobody to match him aside from Kelly (Williams). That was really very big for us,” Reyes said in an interview with DWAR Abante Radyo’s Zeus Valdez.
TNT’s main defensive anchor, Poy Erram, was sidelined after suffering a high ankle sprain in Game 2—a blow that Reyes believes could sideline the veteran for the rest of the series.
“Nakita mo… It’s a high ankle sprain, a severe sprain… We don’t know if we can get him back,” Reyes said.
The Tropang 5G are also missing guards Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac, adding to the team’s growing list of unavailable veterans.
Despite the uphill battle, Reyes said the team remains determined.
“We just take it as it is; we have to find a way, go out there, and keep fighting,” he said. “It’s too much for us to win against a powerful team like San Miguel kung kumpleto kami. Eh ngayon pang kulang-kulang kami? Pero we keep on fighting and see what happens.”
San Miguel now holds a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven championship series.
