Robredo Urges Duterte: Take Back What You Said About Disregaring SC, Congress!

Vice President Leni Robredo criticized President Duterte's remark on planning to disregard wjatever the decision of the Supreme Court and the Congress would be regarding his declaration of martial law on Mindanao.

VP Robredo wanted President Duterte to take back what he said about possible disobedience towards the power and decision of Congress and SC.

"We cannot deny the power of the Congress and the Supreme Court to review any proclamation of Martial Law and the suspension of the privilege of the wrt of habeas corpus," Robredo said.

She further stated that the recent remarks of the President might create an impression to public officials about taking for granted the established rules of the government. She added that the President must be a role model for public officials to still respect and follow the Constitution.

"We urge the president: take back what he said about disregarding Congress and the Supreme Court and be an example to all public servants that in the face of whatever crisis in our nation, we will all remain faithful to our Constitution and our democracy," VP Robredo added.

The said remark made by President Duterte was made during his speech last Saturday, stating that he would ignore the ruling of SC and Congress and instead, base his decisions on military and police reports whether to lift the martial law or extend it

"Hanggang hindi sinabi ng pulis pati Armed Forces na safe na ang Philippines, this Martial Law will continue. Hindi ako makinig sa iba. Mga Supreme Court, 'yung mga congressman, wala man sila dito," the President said in a speech for the soldiers in Jolo.

It can be remembered that the entire Mindanao was put under Martial Law on Tuesday, May 23, following the attacks of the Maute Group who took over Marawi City.

According to the 1987 Constitution, a martial law declaration can only last up to 60 days. After that, the Supreme Court and the Congress will deliberate whether it is necessary to extend martial law or not.

However, Duterte has previously stated that he will only lift the martial law in Mindanao if the terrorist groups have been neutralized. He even stated the possibility of extending the declaration to the Visayas and the entire Philippines  if the terrorist groups persist to continue their violent attachs and start to violate the said areas as well.

However, following the remarks stated by the President, Presidential Spokesperson, Ernesto Abella tried to neutralize the situation.

"As commander in chief he reserves the right to make decisions, but he's listening of course. He's a listening president," Abella said, defending President Duterte.

Robredo previously expressed her support for Duterte regarding the declaration of martial law, but reminded the military group not to abuse their power over the civilians and must not commit human rights violations.

The 1987 Constitution gives the Congress and the Supreme Court power to review a martial law declaration, whether to revoke or accept it, depending on the validity of the declaration.
