A caregiver at a nursing home in Ottawa, Canada was caught on CCTV punching an elderly patient who suffered from dementia.
Footage showed the callous caregiver struggling to change the diaper of his elderly dementia patient. Perhaps out of frustration, he punched the patient multiple times in the face. Georges Karam, the elderly patient, suffers from both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Karam’s relatives were baffled and disturbed upon seeing injuries on the 89-year-old patient since moving him to the care home a couple of years ago. To got to the bottom of his injuries, they installed a high-definition video camera in the elder’s room. The camera filmed 44-year-old Jie Xiao assaulting Karam.

When they watched the footage a few weeks later, they were shocked and disgusted by what they saw. The care worker acted violently and yanked Karam back and forth while changing his diaper. He also punched him in the face 11 times.
“I literally stood up and fell down, my legs gave way because I didn’t know how to respond to this,” Daniel Nassrallah, Karam’s grandson, told the Ottawa Citizen.

In the video, the caregiver delivered rapid punches to Karam after the elderly patient tried to touch the caregiver's face. Xiao paused in between two to three punches and then resumed his violent assault. The blows were clearly audible in the video.
The assault lasted for 28 seconds. Before Xiao’s final hit on the elderly patient, he was seen pointing and cussing at him. Karam then lets out a loud scream.
Xiao then left the room, but came back after less than a minute. He was seen pointing and gesturing aggressively at Karam. He pulled the patient’s blankets up, closed his eyes through his gloved hands, and then patted him on the head.
Xiao admitted to his crime and a sentencing hearing is expected to occur later this year.
