ILOILO CITY — Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog and his wife, Marivic, are staunchly denying that their house next a river park was built from ill-gotten wealth.

Mabilog, who has been named by President Rodrigo Duterte as a drug syndicate protector, has been fending off allegations that he had enriched himself since being elected mayor in 2010.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog made to the headlines after the government announced that the controversial cop, Senior Inspector Jovie Espenido would be appointed to the said city to resolve the illegal drug problem in the city.

Several supporters of Mabilog became worried after President Rodrigo Duterte repeatedly tagged the Mayor in his speeches as a long time drug protector and decided to assign Espenido who killed the mayor of Ozamiz City during an anti-drug operation last month.

A constant critic of Iloilo city Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Manuel "Boy" Mejorada made an expose way back 2015 about the alleged "White House" mansion which was declared to be worth only P3-million. The blog post of Mejorada was no longer available online but it was copied and spread thru social media in the Philippines.

The 'White House' mansion of Jed Patrick Mabilog

IN PHOTO: This palatial house sits on the banks of the Iloilo River, with a P90 million Esplanade built for its occupant by the government for the sake of “beautification”.

Its owner, City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, has declared it to be worth only P3 million in his 2014 Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth. But architects and engineers estimate the value of this mansion to be in the range of P50-70 million, considering that its windows are the expensive Kenneth and Mock glass windows. The windows alone would be worth P7 million considering the size of the house, according to a wealthy friend who also has Kenneth and Mock windows installed on his house.

Now where did the money come from?

Mabilog said it came from his inheritance from his mother. That’s a blatant lie. His mother was never rich. That lot on which the mansion stands was Donated to his mother by the Consing family for whom she had served as “mayor doma” for a long time. If you come to think of it, the property belongs to the family, and not to Jed alone.

Mabilog also points to the work of his wife, Marivic, in Canada. How much does an accountant earn in Canada? She is not even chief executive officer, and the company is small.

It’s time for Mabilog to reveal his sources of income to the people. Ilonggos have a right to know. Did he earn tens of millions of pesos from legitimate Business? The Ombudsman says no. Where he got the fabulous sums of money is a mystery that even Sherlock Holmes might have difficulty figuring out. And if the money came from Business, did Mabilog report the income to BIR or Kim Henares, and that he paid the right taxes?

So many questions. And yet not a single credible answer from Mabilog.

The house was the focus of graft and plunder complaints filed against Mabilog in June, 2015 by former Iloilo provincial administrator Manuel Mejorada before the Office of the Ombudsman Visayas.

Mejorada alleged the house and its furnishings could be worth more than R50-million.

But Mabilog said it was mainly his wife who had spent for the construction of what city residents have come to refer to the “white house.”

Marivic Mabilog said she and her husband decided to invite Iloilo media representatives to the house earlier this week following recurring criticisms on social media, particularly on Facebook.

She said she was hurt by the postings and the insinuations.

“We saved for this house. This is the fruits of our labor. This is to tell everyone the truth about this house,” said Mrs. Mabilog, who worked as accountant and comptroller for geodetic engineering firm in Calgary, Canada for 21 years.

Mayor Mabilog's lawyer, Atty. Joenar Pueblo refutes the accusation and said they have all the documents to prove the innocence of his client.

"We have all the documents which we will submit to the Ombudsman to show that the increase in (Mabilog's) net worth is justifiable."

Meanwhile, the photo of the white house mansion of Mayor Jed Mabilog has been drawing mixed reactions from netizens.
