Gilas Pilipinas Youth finishes 4th in FIBA Asia U-16 Cup

Gilas Pilipinas Youth fell short of a podium finish in the 2023 FIBA Asia U-16 Cup after absorbing an 87-59 defeat to China in the battle for bronze on Sunday evening in Doha, Qatar.

Despite finishing the week-long tournament with back-to-back losses, the Josh Reyes-led Gilas Youth is still assured of a spot in the FIBA U-17 World Cup next year in Turkey.

Coming off a deflating 92-36 semifinal defeat to Australia less than 24 hours ago, Gilas Youth once again struggled offensively against China as they fell behind 29-44 at the half.

China continued its dominance of Gilas Youth in the second half with a 26-8 third quarter score en route to a lopsided victory to claim the bronze medal.

Boyuan Zhang, a 6-foot-8 Chinese big man, spearheaded the offense with 34 points to go with seven rebounds in just roughly 30 minutes of play for China.

Gilas Pilipinas Youth was led by the 17 points of UST Tiger Cubs gunner Joaquin Ludovice and the 13 and 10 markers, respectively, of Kieffer Alas and Irus Chua.
