The Philippine men’s volleyball team has bowed out of medal contention in the 19th Asian Games after a 25-19, 25-14, and 25-23 defeat to Japan on Thursday night at the Deqing Sports Centre Gymnasium in China.
Facing the world-ranked Japan, the Pinoy Spikers managed to keep in step late in the first set as they trailed 18-20 before the Japanese went on a 5-1 finishing run to take a 1-0 set edge.
The Japanese, however, dominated the Filipinos in the second set for an easy 25-14 win, but the former was pushed to the limit in the third frame as they trailed 7-2 before mounting a run to finish the game in three sets.
Steven Rotter top-scored for the Sergio Veloso-led Philippine team with 13 points, while Bryan Bagunas added 10 markers.
The Philippine men’s volleyball team finished their group stage campaign with a 1-2 win-loss slate, while Japan moved on to the round-of-12 with a perfect 3-0 win-loss slate.
