Rhenz Abando, Anyang end KBL season with defeat

Rhenz Abando and the Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters ended their 2023-2024 Korean Basketball League campaign with an 83-81 defeat to the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus on Sunday night at the Ulsan Dongcheon Gymnasium.

Abando finished with 10 points and two rebounds in his potential final game with the Red Boosters, which landed in ninth place at the close of the eliminations with an 18-34 win-loss slate.

Despite a disappointing finish to their title-retention bid, Red Boosters head coach Kim Sang-sik commended his team’s effort this season despite the multiple challenges they encountered this season.

“We worked hard until the end, but we lost, but I told the players that they did a good job. I am grateful to the players who did their best until the end,” Kim said in an interview with Naver Sports.

“There were a lot of twists and turns. Last year, we won the championship, free agent players left, others were enlisted in the military, and some have retired, but we did well,” he added.

Kim further said that their disappointing season will serve as a lesson learned from them to prepare harder for the KBL’s 2024–2025 season.

There were reports that the Red Boosters are looking at a much taller Asian Quota Player next season with the expiration of Abando’s contract this year.

“It is true that we failed, but we learned a lot. We must prepare thoroughly for next season, and we have to evaluate our lineup,” Kim said.
