PVL still deliberating on salary cap implementation

The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) is still deliberating on the implementation of a salary cap among the competing teams to improve the league’s parity.

According to PVL president Ricky Palou, the initial discussion was to set a minimum salary of P50,000 a month and for incoming rookies to receive at most P150,000 monthly.

“Currently, we’re deliberating on maximum caps. The plan is to have the minimum salary at P50,000 and for rookies to have P150,000 a month max,” Palou said in an interview with Sporting Chance.

“At the moment, there is no ceiling for salaries, but PVL intends to level off paychecks to balance out team budgets for parity,” the PVL official added.

Palou said the league plans to implement a salary cap along with the first-ever rookie draft to allow the lower-seeded teams to keep in step with the powerhouse squads.

The PVL president himself said in a previous interview that he was alarmed by how the moneyed teams pay their star players, forcing him to come up with the salary cap suggestion.

“Based on what I hear, P400,000, may pa-kotse pa. Nagugulat nga ako,” Palou said. “I’m telling everybody this is getting out of hand. We have to do something to level things up.”

“If this trend continues, only the rich teams will have the chance to strengthen their roster, while the lower-budget teams will have to compete on an unlevel playing field,” he added.

Through the years, well-funded squads like the Creamline Cool Smashers, Choco Mucho Flying Titans, Chery Tiggo Crossovers, PLDT High Speed Hitters, and Petro Gazz Angels have been dominating the recruitment race.
