READ: Abu Sayyaf Members Start to Surrender!

Four members of the Abu Sayyaf group surrendered on Sunday afternoon in Ungkaya Pukuan, Basilan. This is based on the reports of the military.

According to Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay, the spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Command, the bandits surrendered at the headquarters of the 18th Infantry Battalion in Sitio Camalig, Barangay Bohe Pahu.

Based on the reports of the military, the bandits surrendered around 2PM on Sunday.

The Abu Sayyaf members who surrendered were Usman Mussa, Balie Kasaran, Sadar Tutuh Kasaran, and Sarwin Askalin Kasaran, all residents of Al Barka, Basilan.

They surrendered with their two M16 rifles and a .30 M1 Garand rifle.

Petinglay further responded that according to the bandits, their decision to surrender was because of the recent deaths of Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders, Muammar Askali and Alhabsy Misaya. Muammar Askali was killed in Bohol and Alhabsy Misaya was killed in Sulu.

Furthermore, the military said that the four bandits will be turned over to the Philippine National Police.

On Tuesday last week, three other Abu Sayyaf members surrendered to the military in Tawi-Tawi. These three Abu Sayyaf members were under sub-leader Aljine Mundok.

The three Abu Sayyaf members were identified as Angki Haradja Nickson Abdulmari Jalil, and Asil Sainuddin.

The surrender of the three bandits was also due to the killing of their sub-leader.

One of the three bandits who surrendered on Tuesday last week was Asil Sainuddin.

Sainuddin was responsible for the killing of Datu Nixon Tarsum, the brother of Patikul town Vice Mayor, Datu Adjuwanda Tarsum in 2015.

Brig. Gen. Custodio Parcon, the Joint Task Force Tawi-tawi commander said that the three were involved in fights against the military at Barangay Tugas last May 2013 and at Barangay Buhanginan in Patikul last May 2014. These fights happened when the 2nd Marine Brigade was still based in Sulu

The military said that the surrender of the Abu Sayyaf members may also be due to the recent declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao, wherein due to the suspension of writ of habeas corpus, the military has the right to arrest anyone without a warrant.

Martial Law has been declared in the entire Mindanao on Tuesday by President Duterte after the attacks of the Maute Group. The fight between the military and the terrorist groups is still ongoing and has resulted to the killing of both civilians and the military. The terrorist has also burnt buildings and infrastructures in Marawi City, as well as kidnap civilians, including a priest and 15 other parishioners, on Tuesday.

"But the martial law declaration made them more fearful for their safety as soldiers can already knock at their doorstep without necessary warrants, Petinglay said.

According to Westmincom chief Lt., Gen. Carlito Galvez, Jr., the current number of surrenders increased the number of Abu Sayyaf members who have already surrendered to the government.

As of now, 64 Abu Sayyaf members have already surrendered since January.

The Abu Sayyaf is a group in Mindanao based in Jolo and Basilan. They have been the culprits for the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines.
