Rookie Gia Maquilang proud to lead Letran’s winning start in NCAA

Gia Maquilang, the rookie outside hitter for Colegio de San Juan de Letran, is thrilled to lead the Lady Knights to a victorious beginning in the NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball tournament.

The Boholana volleybelle acknowledged feeling pressure as one of the Lady Knights’ key players but expressed gratitude to head coach Oliver Almadro for bolstering her confidence.

“Masaya po tapos may konting pressure kasi natural lang po ‘yun,” Maquilang said. “Lagi kaming pinu-push ni Coach O na huwag kaming matatakot, and to always be positive.”

The 20-year-old Maquilang did not disappoint on her collegiate debut, as she scored 17 points to go with eight receptions in the Lady Knights’ 16-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 win over the Arellano University Lady Chiefs last Wednesday, April 10.

She followed it up with 19 markers and 11 digs as the Lady Knights bested the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Lady Altas, 25-21, 25-20, 30-28, on Saturday, April 13, for a 2-0 start in the tournament.

“Sinasabi po lagi ni Coach O that we should face our fears at may tiwala po siya sa amin dahil nag-practice po kami para rito,” said Maquilang, who was adjudged the first NCAA Player of the Week for this season.
