Volleyball overtakes basketball as PH’s top sport, declares PNVF head

Volleyball has taken over basketball as the most popular sport in the country, declares Philippine National Volleyball Federation president Ramon “Tats” Suzara.

According to Suzara, the recent huge gate attendance at the Premier Volleyball League 1st All-Filipino Conference and UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament matches supports his claim.

“Number one ang volleyball ngayon na spectator sport sa Pilipinas, hindi na basketball,” said Suzara.

“Volleyball is a family entertainment sport for all ages, families, boyfriends and girlfriends, fathers and mothers. It’s a sport that’s really pang-family.”

“The excitement is there, and with all these events ng volleyball happening next week and in June,” he added. “Sunod-sunod na ang excitement for our volleyball spectators.”

Suzara further said that, compared to Filipino basketball players, the volleyball players in the country interact with their fans in the game venues.

“If you will see the difference, in my experience, in basketball, the FIBA World Cup was more about the players’ experience, but for volleyball, it’s the fan experience,” Suzara said.

“Volleyball players cooperate with the fans; lumalapit sila, they welcome interviews. So I think it makes volleyball now the number one sport in the world, ‘yun lang ang masasabi ko, and in the Philippines, of course,” he added.

Suzara expects the Filipino sports fans to give the same support to the Alas Pilipinas team that will compete in the AVC Women’s Challenge Cup scheduled from May 22 to 29 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
