Czechia outduels Puerto Rico, rules FIVB Challenger Cup

Czechia overcame a third-set defeat to score a 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, and 25-18 victory over Puerto Rico in the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup Finals on Sunday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

After winning the four-day pocket tournament, the No. 16-ranked Czechia also secured their place in the Volleyball Nations League for Women 2025.

Gabriela Orvosova spearheaded the victory with 25 points on 23 attacks and two blocks; Michaela Mlejnkova contributed 18, while Helena Havelkova and Magdalena Jehlarova added 12 and 11 markers, respectively.

After securing tight victories in the first and second sets, Czechia struggled with their attacks in the third set, allowing Puerto Rico to extend the match to another frame.

Czechia were clinging to a slim 12-10 lead early in the fourth set before they unloaded a 5-1 scoring run behind Orvosova and Mlejnkova to create the needed separation from Puerto Rico.

Grace Lopez led Puerto Rico with 23 points. Paola Nicole Santiago Cabrera finished with 18 markers, and Stephanie Rivera contributed 12 points in the defeat.
