Gilas Pilipinas women’s World Cup hopes end after lopsided defeat to Hungary

Gilas Pilipinas national women’s basketball team saw their 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup hopes dashed after a 97-60 loss to Hungary in the pre-qualifying round on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning in Manila) at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

Compared to their close 77-74 loss to No. 8-ranked Brazil, the No. 40 Gilas Pilipinas women were no match against world No. 16 Hungary, as they dropped to a 0-2 record in the group stage.

Hungary surged to a 16-5 start in the opening period, but Gilas Pilipinas women managed to cut it to 14-23 before the former pulled away to a 51-24 halftime lead.

Gilas Pilipinas women’s deficit went up to as high as 39 points in the second half, as they had no answers to the dominant shooting of Hungary.

Agnes Torok scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting, while Reka Lelik and Debora Dubei contributed 13 points each as Hungary improved to a 1-1 win-loss slate.

Afril Bernardino top-scored for Gilas Pilipinas women with 11 points, Ella Fajardo added 10 markers, and Jack Animam was held to just six points and one rebound.
