MANILA, Philippines – As far as Vice President Leni Robredo is concerned, President Rodrigo Duterte’s absence from the Independence Day rites at Luneta Park was a non-issue.

Robredo, a last-minute stand-in for Duterte at the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony, said she understood that the president must have had a good reason for skipping the event.

“I was told the President would not be able to make it when I was around five to 10 minutes away from Luneta. So I was told the President could not make it and they asked if I could take his place,” she told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “To me it was not a problem. I’m sure he had an important reason to be absent.”

According to presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella, Duterte had to take some time off because of his tiring schedule.

“You have to credit the president, considering everything that he has been… actually honoring the military dead, the civilian dead, and he has been actually going around. And, in fact, he would have wanted to be at the symbolic raising (of the flag) and honoring of the dead. So I think we need to allow him … rest. He was actually on top of the situation. However, he also needed rest,” he said.

Abella also assured the public that the president is in perfect health.

“The president is actually in excellent health, except for the fact that his schedule had been brutal,” he said. “Let’s all wish him well.”

Whatever reasons behind the absence of our president last June 12, he deserves respect on that issue.
