The COVID-19 outbreak has caused the stoppage and shutdown of businesses the world over, and the automotive industry is no exception.
The list of manufacturing plants across the globe that have suspended operations due to the spread of the virus continues to grow longer, and the newest addition to the said list is Ford’s Thailand plant, which is set to halt operations starting March 27. This is where Ford Philippines sources its Ranger and Everest units.
“The health and safety of our employees, dealers, customers, partners, and communities is our highest priority,” said Ford International Markets Group president Mark Ovenden. “We are continuing to act in real-time and taking added safety measures by temporarily halting production at our manufacturing sites in the international markets.”
In addition to the closure of its Thailand plant, the carmaker is also temporarily shutting down the Ford Vietnam Limited Haiduong Assembly Plant on March 26, as well as the Silverton Assembly Plant (Pretoria) and Struandale Engine Plant (Port Elizabeth) in South Africa on March 27. Meanwhile, the Vehicle Assembly and Engine Plants situated in Chennai and Sanand in India have been closed since March 21.
Here in the Philippines, carmakers have also suspended operations within Luzon in light of the safety measures that the government has taken in the hopes of mitigating the spread of the virus. No word yet on when said carmakers—as well as Ford’s Thailand production plants—will resume operations. Rest assured, we’ll keep you up to date on these matters.
