Juan Gomez de Liano and the Seoul SK Knights emerged victorious against the Seoul Samsung Thunders, 89-74, in a battle among two Seoul-based teams in the Korean Basketball League on Monday night at the Jamsil Student Gymnasium.
The former University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons star registered only three points along with two assists and one rebound, but it hardly mattered as the SK Knights improved to a 16-8 record for second place.
Jameel Warney flirted with a triple-double with 28 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists; Youngjun Ahn added 16 markers; and Oh Se-geun and Jaehyun Oh ended with 13 and 10 markers, respectively, for the SK Knights.
According to SK Knights head coach Jeon Hee-cheol, their primary game plan against the Samsung Thunders was not to allow the latter’s center, Kofi Coburn, to dominate inside.
“It is important to establish a coordinated defense position before the ball goes to Coburn; since he is so big, it will be too late if we start a cooperative defense after the ball is thrown to him,” Jeon said.
Coburn still managed to finish with 25 points, but on a 9-of-24 field goal shooting, to go with 21 rebounds, while Jeonghyeon Lee and Ishmael Lane had 12 and 11, respectively, as the Samsung Thunders dropped to 4-20.
