San Juan survives Valenzuela’s run, improves to 9-0 in MPBL

The San Juan Knights-Go for Gold overcame a huge fourth quarter run by the Valenzuela Classics VACARGO for a 93-81 victory in the 2024 MPBL season on Tuesday night at the FilOil EcoOil Arena in San Juan.

Leading by as much as 22 points in the second quarter, the Knights were threatened by the Classics’ counterattack in the second half, which cut their lead to as low as nine points at 71-80.

The Knights, however, responded with five straight points from Dexter Maiquez and connections from Zachary Huang and Orlan Wamar Jr. to increase the lead to 12 points with under a minute left.

Wamar was named Player of the Game after finishing with 12 points, including some crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter, as the Knights maintained their unbeaten record after nine games.

“Nagcompose lang kami nung endgame, hindi kami nagmadali, and nagtiwala kami sa sistema namin,” Wamar said. “Collective effort lang din; credit sa teammates ko na nagcontribute lahat.”

Michael Calisaan led the way for San Juan with 19 points, while Maiquez chipped in 13 markers and nine rebounds.

JR Quinahan finished with a season-high of 18 points, while Darell Manliguez and Calvin Payawal added 14 and 13 markers, respectively, as the Classics dropped to a 6-5 mark.
