FIBA U-17 World Cup: Gilas Pilipinas Boys falter to Puerto Rico

Gilas Pilipinas U-17 Boys Basketball Team were unable to sustain their strong start to bow to Puerto Rico, 98-53, in the 2024 FIBA U-17 World Cup on Tuesday night at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Turkey.

The Josh Reyes-led Philippine squad caught fire in the opening quarter behind Kurt Velasquez, Joaquin Ludovice, and Cletz David Amos to establish a 24-16 advantage.

Gilas Pilipinas Boys, however, struggled heavily in the second and third quarters as they were outscored by the Puerto Ricans, 62-10, en route to establishing a 78-34 advantage.

Jordan Dill top-scored for Puerto Rico with 15 points, Vincent Stewart Jr. added 11 markers, and Jahrel Vigo, Rognny Santiago, and Justin Roman ended with 10 points apiece.

Ludovice and Velasquez, both members of the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs, finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the Gilas Pilipinas Boys, while Amos added eight markers.

Gilas Pilipinas Boys will next face the top-seed United States in the knockout round of 16 on Wednesday night.
