Two of America’s largest car manufacturers might be about to lend authorities a helping hand in the fight against COVID-19.
According to a report by Reuters, both Ford and General Motors are now in talks with White House officials to possibly support the production of medical equipment amid the spread of the coronavirus.
The report states that GM “is working to help find solutions for the nation during this difficult time and has offered to help, and we are already studying how we can potentially support production of medical equipment like ventilators,” said company spokesperson Jeannine Ginivan.
Ford, meanwhile, said a few days ago that it “stands ready to help the administration in any way we can, including the possibility of producing ventilators and other equipment. We have had preliminary discussions with the US government and are looking into the feasibility.”
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow appreciated both companies’ support, calling Ford and GM’s initiative a “kind of can-do spirit.”
The report added that the UK government has already requested assistance from Honda, Rolls-Royce, and Ford in manufacturing ventilators and other health equipment. In China, meanwhile, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co Ltd—a joint venture between GM, Liuzhou Wuling Motors, and SAIC Motor—is already manufacturing masks and medical clothing on some of its production lines.
It’s good to see the automotive industry pitching in to fight this deadly virus. Hopefully, other car manufacturers around the world follow in Ford and GM’s footsteps, too.
