UAAP takes no action on NU’s appeal to upgrade foul for UP’s Malick Diouf’s ‘punch’

UAAP Commissioner Xavier Nunag has not responded to the National University’s request to elevate the unsportsmanlike foul assessed against University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons center Maodo Malick Diouf for his close-fist hit on Bulldogs’ Mark Padrones.

NU board representative Nilo Ocampo disclosed that they had requested Nunag to review Diouf’s foul, but it appears the UAAP commissioner dismissed the appeal since the UP foreign student-athlete participated in the game against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws last Wednesday for the Fighting Maroons.

Incidentally, Nunag was a former player for the Fighting Maroons.

“The NU sent a letter to the UAAP Commissioner to further review (Padrones’) collision with UP’s Malick Diouf in their game last Saturday and upgrade his unsportsmanlike foul to a 1-game suspension,” Ocampo told Rappler Sports’ Naveen Ganglani.

“But, because (NU) has not received a response and Diouf played in UP’s following game against FEU, the school believes the call is upheld,” he added.

“We feel bad about it, but that’s how it is—we just have to respect their decision—but we’re not happy with the decision,” Ocampo further said.

The incident took place during the Fighting Maroons’ 78-60 victory over the Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament last Saturday when Diouf went up for a dunk.

As he celebrates his dunk, Diouf lands a close-fist hit into the face of Padrones, who sustained three fractures on his face, including nasal and orbital, and is likely out for the rest of the season.

Instead of a disqualifying foul, which will mean automatic ejection, one-game suspension, and disqualification from individual awards, the reigning MVP Diouf was only called for an unsportsmanlike foul.
