UST coach Haydee Ong pleads for consistency from Growling Tigresses

University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses head coach Haydee Ong is pleading for consistency from her players, even if they have a 3-0 record to start the UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball tournament.

According to Ong, there are still several instances where the Growling Tigresses are showing irregularity, particularly during their lopsided 91-57 victory against the De La Salle University Lady Archers (0-3) last Sunday.

“Against the Lady Archers, we started strong in the first quarter and bumaba lang nung second quarter,” Ong said after the match. “Hopefully, we’ll be consistent na every quarter manalo kami. We’ll play better.”

Ong shared that her pet peeve in the Growling Tigresses’ first three games of the season is when they commit defensive lapses.

“Alam niyo naman, I’m a defensive coach, kaya naiinis ako kapag hindi sila dumedepensa. Hopefully, we can sustain ourselves in our next games yung depensa namin ang get another win for us,” said Ong.

The Growling Tigresses showed that defensive bite against the Lady Archers as they forced their opponent to commit 30 turnovers, which translated into 32 turnover points.

Ana Tacatac top-scored for the Growling Tigresses against the Lady Archers with 25 points; Brigitte Santos added 14 markers; Tantoy Ferrer and Rocel Dionisio had 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws improved to a 2-1 win-loss slate after a 63-53 victory over the University of the East Lady Warriors (0-3). Jaina Del Prado and Congolese student-athlete Josee Kaputu tallied 13 points each to lead FEU.
