Coach Jerson Cabiltes dissatisfied despite EAC’s best finish in years

Despite guiding the Generals to a commendable finish in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament, Emilio Aguinaldo College head coach Jerson Cabiltes was not satisfied.

Cabiltes regards his rookie year as Generals head coach as a failure, expressing disappointment as the team did not achieve their primary objective of reaching the NCAA Final Four for the first time.

“Actually, in any season, before you start, you think of a goal, and our goal was to make it to the Final Four, so for me, I still failed in leading the team to the Final Four,” Cabiltes said.

“I don’t think it’s an overachievement na nine wins considering the boys; I know they can play. They’re gonna think whether you underachieve or overachieve, but it doesn’t matter. What matters is if you make it to the next round,” he added.

Before the Generals secured a seventh-place finish with a 9-9 record this season, their best performance in the NCAA was in 2013 under the guidance of Gerry Esplana, where the team achieved a 10-8 win-loss record, landing them in the fifth spot.

Under then-head coach Oliver Bunyi last season, the Generals managed to secure only three victories in 18 games.

Despite previous challenges, Cabiltes emphasized that their 77-69 victory over the Final Four-bound College of St. Benilde Blazers last Wednesday, concluding the NCAA season, serves as a significant confidence boost as they look ahead to the 100th season next year.

“I just reminded the boys that we want to end this season with a win to get momentum going into the next season,” Cabiltes said. “We needed to get this win, even though it has no bearing.”

In the upcoming NCAA season, the Generals are poised to strengthen their roster with the addition of transfers Harvey Pagsanjan, AP Manlapaz, Deo Lucero, Wilmar Oftana, Axel Doromal, and Jude Bagay.
