Without the back injury that plagued him last season, a happier EJ Obiena felt more confident heading into this year’s competitions.
The two-time Olympian recently secured a silver finish at the International Jump Meeting Cottbus 2025 in Germany, and he is just glad to perform without pain.
“I’m happy, very positively happy that the first competition’s done, and I’m getting the feel of how my body reacts,” said Obiena in ABS-CBN News.
“It’s a good sign. I’m very excited with how [this year] is going to be.”
Obiena had been dealing with back issues leading up to and during his stint in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he narrowly missed a podium finish.
He received medical clearance back in October but was cautious not to overwork his back as he prepared for this year’s competitions.
“I got slowly, slowly back into the mix of things, training camps here and there,” said Obiena.
