Sen. Trillanes Says Mindanao Martial Law is Alarming According to Statistics

Senator Antonio Trillanes wanted the public to focus its attention on the 12% drop of President Rodrigo Duterte's satisfaction rating in Mindanao.

Senator Trillanes stated that the public must not be waned by the overall net rating of President Duterte, which is actually high, and focus on the "alarming" drop of his ratings in Mindanao that he, Sen. Trillanes, pointed out to have been caused by the President's declaration of martial law over the entire area.

Furthermore, Senator Trillanes stated that such drop in the President's rating clearly shows a different perspective and side of the Marawi siege and the martial law in Mindanao.

He said that this perspective about Marawi implicated by the drop of rating is "totally different and alarming", as opposed to the report of the administration about progress on the battle against the terrorist groups.

"Those from Luzon and Visayas most likely appreciated the AFP's effective responses to the Maute group, hence the increase in satisfaction rating," Trillanes stated in a text statement released in public on Friday.

"On the other hand, the 12 percent dip in Mindanao shows a totally different and alarming picture," he added, referring to the possible negative effects of the martial law and government actions towards the people of Mindanao, particularly in Marawi where the fight is still ongoing.

President Rodrigo Duterte's satisfaction rating in Mindanao dropped, as revealed by the survey conducted by the Social Weather Station (SWS). The statistics showed that during the March survey, Duterte had 87 as rating but dropped to 75 in June.

Senator Trillanes stated that this is probably a result of the declaration of martial law which happened on May 23.

Despite the 12-point drop in the President's rating, the rating though is still considered "excellent" and much higher than his satisfaction ratings in Visayas where his ratings went up to +73 (from +62) and +58, an increase from +51 for Luzon.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), Duterte's net satisfaction rating decreased by one single point, dropping from +64 in March 2017 survey to +63 in June survey.

However, as the SWS survey results were released, two representatives from the opposition downplayed or disregarded the high ratings of President Duterte's first year in office to further say that such statistics and popularity ratings do not necessarily mean genuine change.

Ifugao Representative Teddy Baguilat said that "popularity ratings are not an indication of real change or genuine progress."

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian personally assessed the situation as Duterte's first rite of passage as this country's president. According to him, Duterte's high ratings proved that he passed his "first true test of leadership."

"The rebellion in Marawi has been the first true test of leadership for the Duterte administration. Based on the President's improved approval rating in the latest SWS poll, it seems that he is passing this test so far," Gatchalian said in a statement.

"The true character of a leader is often revealed during times of crisis, and the Filipino people have responded positively to the fearless devotion displayed by the Commander-in-Chief and our soldiers in their mission to bring the Marawi crisis to an end," he added.

The SWS survey was conducted from June 23 to June 26, more than one month after the president declared martial law over Mindanao on May 23.
