Nico Salva clarifies report on rookie Brandon Bates

Former Meralco player Nico Salva refuted a report that Bolts rookie Brandon Bates remains unsigned after asking for a veteran’s maximum salary.

The report came from sports columnist Homer Sayson, who said that Bates’ camp is asking for a salary of P420,000 a month, the maximum salary of a veteran player in the PBA. However, rookies are only entitled to a maximum salary of P200,000 a month.

“1. Bates does not have a camp. 2. He never asked for the max. 3. Your source is not credible,” Salva replied to Sayson’s post.

Sayson answered and said that he will stand by what his sources told him.

“Thank you for reaching out @nico8salva and I appreciate you doing so in a polite and respectful manner,” the sports columnist replied to Salva. “And while I stand by my sources, I will now — moving f forward with this reporting— take note that Bates refutes the claim and that he has no camp other than agent Anton Altamirano whom I am also in contact with.”

Bates is the remaining Top 10 pick from the recent draft who has yet to sign with his team. Standing at 6’9, his addition will greatly improve the Bolts’ frontline. (MJD)
