Greg Slaughter benched as Manila prevails over Valenzuela

Gregory Slaughter failed to leave the bench in his supposed Manila SV Batang Sampaloc SGA Stars debut as they prevailed over the Valenzuela Classic VACARGO, 90-76, in the 2024 MPBL Season on Friday night at the San Andres Sports Complex.

The former Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings center was suited up for the contest but was not fielded by Stars head coach Gabby Severino as they improved to a 5-3 win-loss slate.

In an interview prior to the game, Slaughter said he was happy to be part of the Stars and is looking forward to helping the squad make an impact in the MPBL.

“I have been loving it. Everyone is giving me a warm welcome. Got some great management, great coaches, and awesome teammates. I am having a good time,” Slaughter said.

“I am no stranger to Philippine basketball; I have been playing here since 2007 and made my way up through the college ranks, so hopefully I can share my experience with the young guys and make us have good chemistry and play as a team,” he added.

Shawn Umali led the way for the Stars with 19 points and seven rebounds before being ejected late in the game due to two technical fouls, while Carl Bryan Cruz had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Stars were leading for most of the way and were up by as many as 18 points before the Classic countered with a run to cut the deficit to 65-74 on three-pointers from Chris de Chavez.

Manila, however, answered with two outside connections from DJ Mitchell and free throws from Ira Bataller and Lorenzo Navarro to stretch the lead back to double digits with under a minute left.

In other results, the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards (6-0) maintained their unbeaten run after a 105-66 triumph over the Bulacan Kuyas (1-8), while the Sarangani Marlins (2-6) edged the Imus Agimat VA Drones (0-8), 106-101.
