Terrafirma’s Go: Outside shooting key in upset victory against SMB

Isaac Go knocked down a total of six triples while helping Terrafirma complete a 106-95 upset against top seeded San Miguel Beer in their quarterfinal pairing on Saturday.

Through his efforts, he was able to finish with 21 points while forcing June Mar Fajardo out of his comfort zone inside the shaded lane.

Go said after the game that his shooting clicked just in time.

“’Yung last game I missed like four to five shots in a row,” confessed Go. “They told me to keep shooting, and finally it carried over; that’s what we have to do to defeat a juggenaut like San Miguel.”

The 6-foot-seven center said he felt he needed to resort to his outside shooting to escape Fajardo’s offense.

“When you go up against June Mar, he’s a great rim protector, and he has great paint defense… We know San Miguel is the No. 1 three-point shooting team; kami ang No. 2, so napa-challenge kami.”

With the win, the eighth-seeded Dyip not only negated the Beermen’s twice-to-beat advantage but also forced a deciding game on Wednesday.

For coach Johnedel Cardel, it would all boil down to his players’ poise and maintaining their hard-nosed defense.

“We’re playing good defense. Alam nila ginagawa sa loob, ‘yung switching,” said Cardel.

“Siyempre, it’s a different story (come the sudden-death game). This is a champion team, di ba? But we will just do our part… go back to practice on Monday, go back to the video, and titingnan namin mga dapat naming gawin doon sa mga mali namin.”
