PBA games have higher TV ratings than UAAP, PVL matches, says Cignal

The PBA games’ TV ratings are five times bigger than the UAAP games and three times better than the Premier Volleyball League matches, Cignal TV said.

Based on the figures presented by Cignal TV, Inc.’s Vice President of Channels and Content, Sienna Olaso, during the PBA’s annual planning session in Osaka, Japan, the league matches had 975,200 viewers on average last season.

UAAP basketball and volleyball games have 218,400 viewers on average, while PVL has 313,040, the NBA has 218,400, and the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has 145,600.

All five sports leagues are being covered by TV5 and Cignal TV.

“When you look at all the leagues, (PBA ratings are) three times more than the PVL and five times more than the UAAP,” said Olaso. “Ito pa rin ang pinapanood ng maraming Pilipino.”

“Based on our numbers taken from Nielsen, the PBA still continues to dominate ratings among sports programs. Filipinos watch PBA more than any other sport,” she added.

The figures presented by Cignal are in contrast to the live viewers in the game venue, where the UAAP and PVL matches are enjoying more sell-out crowds than PBA, which played in smaller venues like Ninoy Aquino Stadium and Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

PBA board chairman Ricky Vargas was delighted with the TV ratings presented but said that the challenge for the league in the upcoming season is to convert the TV viewers into live spectators at game venues.

“The idea is how to convert these million views into people who can come and watch the game. That’s the challenge, and that’s the discussion that’s going on on this board,” Vargas said.
