The parents of a young girl still couldn't believe that a simple stiff neck was actually a symptom of a deadly disease which was suffered by their teenage daughter Jessica.
According to Monica Charmaine Licayan, her 15 year-old daughter, complained of a stiff neck which also accompanied with a fever.
They took her to a doctor to have a check-up and the result turned out fine. However, her condition suddenly got serious.
Monica recounted that there were times that her daughter was hallucinating, saying and seeing something unrealistic.
As her condition got worst, they took their daughter to a hospital in Manila, thinking that their daughter was infected by dengue but after series of test, the result was negative.
Until Jessica passed away this March. According to the doctor the cause of her death was Japanese encephalitis, just like dengue this deadly disease can be transmitted through mosquito bites.
Japanese encephalitis is an infection of the brain caused by the mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis virus.
Based on the Department of Health (DOH). There are about 300 cases of Japanese encephalitis recorded in the entire country.
In the DOH-Central Luzon, about 149 cases has been recorded in the region and from that number, 22 cases were recorded in Pampanga.
Unfortunately, there is no cure of this disease but there is a vaccine available to prevent it.
The cost of vaccination is about 3500-5000 pesos in private hospitals or clinic.
So therefore, the doctors advice is to see medical specialist as soon as the symptoms of Japanese encephalitis occurred.
If a person was bitten by a mosquito with Japanese encephalitis, within 5 to 15 days common symptoms may appear like fever, headache, vomiting, confusion and difficulty in moving.
