Ginebra fans disappointed with Maverick Ahanmisi’s chosen jersey number

The jersey number choice of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings guard Maverick Ahanmisi didn’t sit well with some die-hard Gin Kings fans.

Ahanmisi, who has worn jersey number 13 throughout his basketball career, announced on Thursday that he will be switching to number 30 for the Gin Kings.

“I cannot wear the number 13 for obvious reasons, so I will be wearing number 30,” Ahanmisi said in a video posted on the Gin Kings’ Instagram account.

Some Ginebra fans believe Ahanmisi should choose a different number since Eric Menk, the franchise’s first-ever PBA MVP, previously wore number 30.

“That’s Eric Menk’s jersey number, though.”

“I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t retire Major Pain’s number. He contributed a lot of things for the Gin Kings, especially in his heydays.”

“That’s Eric Menk’s number, all due respect.”

“No disrespect to Mav, but I believed they should not allow anyone to wear that jersey number. Fyi, that belongs to the very first franchise MVP.”

“EMenk’s number.”

At present, Barangay Ginebra has retired two jersey numbers: Robert “Sonny” Jaworski’s number 7 and Allan Caidic’s number 8.

The management has intentions to retire Anthony “Jayjay” Helterbrand’s number 13 and Mark Caguioa’s number 47, but no official ceremony has taken place yet.
