Samjosef Belangel and the Daegu Korea Gas Corporation Pegasus maintained their positive momentum in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) with an 88-75 victory over the Seoul SK Knights on Monday night at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium.
The Bacolod City-native spitfire finished with 17 points, including two three-point conversions, to go with five assists and two steals as the Pegasus climbed to eighth place in the standings with a 12-21 record.
Andrew Nicholson anchored the Pegasus’ offense with 33 points alongside nine rebounds, three assists, and a block; Jihoon Park added 13 markers; and DuVaughn Maxwell had eight points and four boards in the win.
Pegasus acting head coach Kang Hyuk credited his team’s much-improved defense for their turnaround this season after placing in 10th and last place for most of the first round of eliminations.
“The defense gave up over 90 points during our early matches. This is the part that was messy,” Kang said. “As time goes by, it seems like the defense has become more cohesive.”
“We will do what we can in our upcoming games so that it gets better with each round. I don’t think it’s time to worry about the playoffs, but I think it’s important to do your best in each game. I will show you how things change little by little,” he added.
Jameel Warney finished with 21 points, while Filipino-Italian guard Juan Gomez de Liano tallied two points in almost five minutes of action as the SK Knights dropped to 23-11.
