John Byron Villarias showcased his impressive outside shooting skills as the Nueva Ecija Capitals maintained their flawless record in the Pilipinas Super League President’s Cup, securing a convincing 111-90 victory over the Cam Norte Warriors on Monday at the FilOil EcoOil Arena in San Juan.
The former Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers gunner drilled three outside hits to top-score 17 points as the Capital notched their 11th victory in as many matches this season.
“Maganda ang ipinapakita namin so far siguro because we follow the team system well,” said Villarias, uncle of Shiga Lakes guard Kiefer Ravena. “Siguro may swerte din na napasok ko ‘yung mga outside shots ko.”
Robby Celiz and William McAloney backed up Villarias offensively with 13 markers apiece; Harvey Pagsanjan and Nat Cosejo contributed 12 each; and Michael Juico tallied 10 for Nueva Ecija.
From a close 23-22 score after the first quarter, Nueva Ecija slowly created separation from Cam Norte in the second period for a 54-45 halftime score, later widening it to as high as 23 points in the final quarter.
James Martinez fell short of a triple-double with 24 points, 12 assists, and nine rebounds, while Wowie Escosio and Alfren Gayosa added 18 each as the Warriors dropped to a 1-8 record.
