Report: Boxing not yet included in 2028 LA Olympics sporting events

Olympian boxers like Nesthy Petecio, Aira Villegas, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial might not be able to represent the Philippines in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games anymore.

This is because the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has so far not included boxing in the list of sporting events that will be played in the 2028 LA Olympics, as reported by Reuters.

IOC president Thomas Bach said they did not include boxing in the LA Olympics after stripping the International Boxing Association (IBA) of recognition last year for failure to implement reforms on governance and finance.

However, Bach explained that boxing might still be inserted into the LA Summer Games program if the national boxing federations create a new global boxing body by next year.

“During the course of next year, as soon as possible, but we cannot wait longer than the end of next year,” Bach said when asked when the IOC would decide on the sport’s inclusion or not for Los Angeles.

The IOC suspended the IBA in 2019 over governance, finance, refereeing, and ethical issues and did not involve it in running the boxing events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics before stripping it of recognition in 2023.

In the just-concluded Paris Olympics, both Petecio and Villegas captured bronze medals in their respective events, while Marcial, Paalam, and Hergie Bacyadan failed to reach the medal rounds.
