The best way to shoot a Nissan GT-R Nismo is with another GT-R

There’s a tool for every job out there—it’s just a matter of finding the right one. And if the job happens to entail filming one of the most intense automobiles on the planet around a track over and over and over again...we may just have found it.

This, friends, is a Nissan GT-R, but it’s not just any regular old Godzilla—this one’s been built to shoot its even quicker Nismo counterpart. The vehicle was developed by the Japanese carmaker specifically to keep up with and shoot the red, white, and black track beast, and probably any other car Nissan’s marketing department chooses to throw at it.

Professional precision driver and automotive video expert Mauro Calo played an integral role in this thing’s design, even locating a suitable GT-R unit to turn into a monster of a tracking car. From there, it was fitted with a bespoke tubular structure welded to the car’s chassis to hold the weight of a pro carbon-fiber gimbal mount.

“When I started to think about developing a high-performance camera car, I quickly realized that the Nissan GT-R was the only car that would meet my criteria,” Calo says. “It has supercar performance, with outstanding all-wheel-drive handling and stability. It’s famously reliable, and it can seat the team I need to operate the camera system. There were no other contenders.”

Nissan says some of the GT-R’s traits that made the GT-R the ideal base car are its low center of gravity, four-seat configuration (allowing for a full camera crew inside during runs), and 3.8-liter V6 for, you know, keeping up with its subject.

“I knew already, from driving it on photo and video shoots, what a great car the Nissan GT-R is,” Calo adds. “But since I adapted my Nissan GT-R to be a high-speed camera car and have been using it to film some of the world’s fastest cars on track, my respect and appreciation of its performance, reliability, and stability has only increased. It amazes me and the teams I work with every time we use it.”
