Brownlee fails doping test, says ITA

Gilas Pilipinas’ naturalized player Justin Brownlee has tested positive for a banned substance, Carboxy-THC, according to the International Testing Agency (ITA).

Brownlee, who played a crucial part in the Philippines’ Asian Games gold medal win, has been tested positive for the banned Carboxy-THC, said the ITA.

The substance is linked to cannabis use.

The test sample was taken during an in-game anti-doping control on October 7.

The ITA said it has already informed Brownlee of the case.

“He has the right to request the analysis of the B-samples,” it said in a report by ABS-CBN News.

The ITA said that Jordan’s Sami Bzai also tested positive for a banned steroid.

Gilas defeated Jordan 70-60 in the men’s basketball final of the Asiad. It was the Philippines’ first Asiad gold medal win in basketball since 1962.

Brownlee is the second athlete from the Philippines to fail the doping test.

The first was cycling’s Ariana Evangelista, who was placed under provisional suspension.
