Tim Cone: Tony Bishop is Ginebra’s import for PBA Comm’s Cup

The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings have secured the services of Tony Bishop for their quest to retain the title in the 2023-2024 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, commencing on November 5 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Gin Kings head coach Tim Cone confirmed the hiring of the American-Panamanian player as their interim import, with Justin Brownlee facing possible suspension due to his failed doping test in the 19th Asian Games.

“For the meantime, we have searched out another import, and we will be bringing in Tony Bishop (as Brownlee’s replacement),” Cone said in an interview with the CNN Philippines Sports Desk on Friday night.

Cone added that the 6-foot-7 Bishop was the first player they thought of as Brownlee’s possible replacement, as he made it hard for them during the 2021 PBA Governor’s Cup finals, which were won by the Gin Kings.

“He was the guy that we had such a tough time with, such a tight defending with because he is so versatile and level-headed and we could not get under his skin,” Cone said.

“So he is one of the first guys that we thought of, and we are fortunate because he was supposed to go to Mexico to play as an import, but we caught up with him and asked him if he could come over to us,” he added.

Bishop, who came from a stint with Atléticos de San Germán in Puerto Rico, is expected to arrive on Saturday morning and will join the Ginebra’s practice on Monday.
