The Cignal HD Spikers gained a head start in the PVL All-Filipino Conference battle-for-third place series after a 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, and 25-20 victory over the Chery Tiggo Crossovers in Game 1 on Thursday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Vanessa Gandler came away with 21 points on 20 attacks and a block, while Jovelyn Gonzaga delivered 15 points, including three blocks, to go with 17 digs and 12 excellent receptions for the HD Spikers.
“I’m very happy with how the team performed. Given that we didn’t have much time to rest, we’re very tired, but today was really more of a test of character and heart, so we all just poured our hearts out,” said Gandler.
Frances Molina also provided the leadership for Cignal HD and scored 13 markers, while Roselyn Doria and Genevieve Casugod matched six-point outputs and Marivic Meneses chipped in four points.
“Kahit na nag-struggle kami nung last game namin, good thing nakabawi kami and importante para sa amin ito. Papahalagahan namin itong bronze medal match kasi syempre medal pa rin ito,” said Cignal head coach Shaq Delos Santos.
Pauline Gaston top scored for the Crossovers with 14 points, while sisters Eya and EJ Laure posted 13 markers apiece, while Czarina Carandang settled for a four-point showing.
The HD Spikers will try to clinch their third consecutive PVL bronze medal when they battle the Crossovers in Game 2 of their series on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
