Justin Gutang and the Changwon LG Sakers outdueled Rhenz Abando and the Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters, 94-75, in the Korean Basketball League on Tuesday night at the Changwon Gymnasium.
Gutang, formerly of the College of St. Benilde Blazers, regained his offense as he finished with 15 points, including three outside shots, to go with seven assists and five rebounds for the LG Sakers.
LG Sakers head coach Cho Sang-hyeon praised Gutang for doing his role and stepping up offensively while his teammates were having a hard time scoring against the Red Boosters.
“When we need a shot, we put a shooter in, and when we need to break it up, we use Gutang’s speed,” Cho said in a post-game interview. “I couldn’t use him (Gutang) in our previous game, but he was able to play his role well (against Anyang).”
Assem Marei top-scored with 20 points to go with six rebounds, while Kwanhee Lee contributed 16 points as the LG Sakers remained in second place with a 17-8 win-loss slate.
“It feels like I’m smiling for the first time in 10 days,” Cho further said. “It’s true that the team and players’ mood has calmed down due to the poor results of the weekend games.”
Robert Carter top-scored for the defending champion Red Boosters with 24 points, including two three-pointers, while Kim Cheol-wook and Jeong Hyo-geun had 11 and 10, respectively.
Abando, for his part, played almost 27 minutes but only ended up with two points from the free throw area to go with six rebounds and one steal as the Red Boosters dropped to 10-15.
