Retired PBA player turned coach Jojo Lastimosa expressed that he couldn’t forget the late Samboy Lim, particularly appreciating how Lim treated him after their infamous collision on the court.
During his eulogy for Lim, Lastimosa reflected on the 1989 incident where they collided midair, resulting in Lim’s injury.
Lastimosa, playing for Purefoods at the time, accidentally struck the driving “Skywalker” Lim in the head midair, causing Lim to flip upside down and fall headfirst to the ground.
“A lot of people remember that incident we had in ’89; he had a bad fall that actually caused that fall, and when he drove… Bantay ko si Samboy, tinamaan ko sa ulo, he is going to the basket really hard,” Lastimosa said in an ABS-CBN News report.
“He goes to the basket really hard every single time. Hindi po uubra si Samboy na pa medyo medyo lang, so I hit him slightly on the forehead, and pag angat, he was already off balance and had a terrible fall.”
Lastimosa shared that despite the incident, Lim later inquired about how he was doing, showcasing Lim’s sportsmanship even though Lastimosa was initially seen by fans as a villain due to the collision.
“Shows how faithful Samboy is to his friends. Alam naman nya di ko sinasadya,” said Lastimosa.
“Back in the day, wala pa social media nun, but I was, I became a villain sa mga fans. Kung ngayon nangyari ‘yun, Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok lahat siguro Jolas talagang na kastigo na ako,” he said.
