De Brito expresses desire to remain with Alas Pilipinas beyond AVC tourney

Jorge Edson Souza de Brito wants to continue as the head coach of the Alas Pilipinas national women’s volleyball team beyond their campaign in the AVC Challenge Cup for Women, which will end tonight.

According to De Brito, he aims to witness the development of the current batch of Philippine women’s volleyball players and, at the same time, discover more potential Alas players.

“If you ask me, I want to stay here,” De Brito said. “I want to see the development of this team… Also, there are a lot of good Philippine volleyball players who have potential to play on the national team.”

Earlier this week, Philippine National Volleyball Federation head Ramon “Tats” Suzara said they would request from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to extend De Brito’s tenure with Alas Pilipinas.

De Brito arrived in the country in July 2021 under the FIVB’s national team development program. If ever he is recalled from the Philippine team, he is likely to be replaced by another coach from Italy.

The Brazilian volleyball coach said that he was proud of the performance of Alas Pilipinas, even though they only had a short time to prepare for the tournament.

“What I liked about our team… They never gave up in any moment,” De Brito said. “These guys are on their way to being much better than this one. It’s a promise that they made to themselves.”
