Kume Willie on Amores’ light punishment: Ang anak pinaparusahan, hindi pinapabayaan

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial defended the league’s decision to impose only a conference-long suspension on NorthPort Batang Pier guard John Amores rather than an indefinite ban.

Marcial stated that he views Amores and other PBA players as his sons, emphasizing the importance of punishment as a means of guidance rather than abandonment in the face of mistakes.

“Parang anak natin itong mga players. Kapag may anak tayo, pinaparusahan natin, pero hindi natin pinapabayaan,” Marcial said in a press conference on Friday night.

“Sana ayusin nila buhay nila. We’re giving them the opportunities to better themselves,” he added. “Hopefully, he focuses on making himself a better player.”

As part of his punishment, Amores will not receive a salary from his mother team during the suspension period and is required to undergo counseling, obtaining clearance from his counselors before he can return to play.
However, Amores is allowed to participate in Batang Pier’s practices during his suspension, as the PBA stated that “isolating him from his normal environment will not be helpful or healthy for his rehabilitation.”

The former Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers star was punished by the league after getting involved in a shooting incident after a basketball game in Lumban, Laguna, last month.

This is not the first time Amores was involved in a “basketbrawl” after previously punching University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons’ Mark Belmonte in a pre-season game in July 2022, when he was still with the Heavy Bombers.

In the NCAA men’s basketball tournament later that year, Amores was once again involved in a “basketbrawl” when he charged to the College of St. Benilde Blazers’ bench and punched several players there.
