Family issue keeps Aguilar from joining Gilas camp, Qatar friendlies

Japeth Aguilar will miss Gilas Pilipinas’ training camp and friendlies in Doha, Qatar.

As the national team prepares for its FIBA Asia Cup campaign, coach Tim Cone confirmed that the veteran forward will not be joining them when they depart for Doha on February 13.

“Japeth won’t be able to join us in Doha. He’s the only guy that we’ll be missing,” said Cone in Spin.ph. “He has a family issue that he has to deal with.”

“But he’ll be with us in Taiwan.”

Gilas will play against Chinese Taipei and New Zealand in the final leg of the Asia Cup qualifiers.

Stepping up for Aguilar is his Ginebra teammate and Gilas alternate Troy Rosario.

“We’ve added Troy. Right now while we’re going to Doha, he is an alternate,” said Cone. “But we’ll decide before we go to Taiwan whether he will be on the actual 12 or still continue to be an alternate.”

Also missing the campaign is Kai Sotto, who underwent surgery for his ACL injury.

Joining Gilas in Qatar are June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez, Scottie Thompson, Chris Newsome, Calvin Oftana, Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao, AJ Edu, Amos, naturalized player Justine Brownlee, and Jamie Malonzo.
